Fashion Identity and Other Identities

I was reading an article on how New York City was losing its fashion identity. Hmmm. Places like Paris, London, Milan, Rome, Florence, and Tokyo are the fashion centres of the world, the world which buys up-market clothes.

In these cities, the trend has been towards skirts and even dresses. Two leading designers have modest wear which is trendy for younger women. Two of these outfits I would wear.

Amazing.

So, why is there NOT an American city on the top five list of fashion centers?

It has to do with the dumbing down of art, architecture, entertainment, literature and culture in the States.

I grew up with "kulchur"-- we went to plays, concerts, had classical music in the home and all of us were and are "creative".

This type of milieu was normal for me and part of the identity of being Catholic.

Catholics have always patronized the arts.

So, could it be that the moral and political barbarians at the gate have also brought down culture?

Yes, they have.

Still, I hear this old criticism of the Church being too rich and needing to sell all the property and give it to the poor . Only socialists and communists, who really know the value of symbolism believe that.

Plus, from where I stand and look, the Church is very poor. Very.

Back to Milan vs. New York.

Fashion is set by kings, queens, leaders. Who wants to look like ......?

Somone I know sad the space industry in America was immoral and all that money should be given to the poor. This comment reveals both anti-intellectualism and a misunderstanding of human nature. We are created in the Image and Likeness of God and He is The Creator.

He is the One Who Creates out of nothing. We created in imitation. Poesis/Mimesis

I am all for creativity of all kinds, as long as it is such and not either stupid, pastiche, or blasphemous.

I honestly expect NYC never to be a leader in anything in the near and most likely far future.

Without religion, there can be no real spirit of creativity in a culture. If we identify ourselves as Catholics, we can identify with Beauty Who is God. Without an identity of beauty,we become beasts...
