A Plea from LifeSiteNews

Note: While the outrageous lawsuit against LifeSiteNews is finally over, we are still $95,000 short of being able to covering the outstanding legal costs. We just do not have the funds for this extraordinary expense. Please help us move beyond this painful chapter in our history, and make a donation to our Christmas fundraiser today by clicking here.

A Catholic priest announces on the radio that he is “pro-choice” and “not even the Pope” can prevent him from receiving communion. He gets elected as a federal politician, and goes on to earn a 100% “pro-abortion” voting record, openly supports same-sex “marriage,” attacks Church leaders who defend Catholic teaching, and agitates in favor of legalizing euthanasia.

And through all of this, he not only continues to function as a priest in good standing, but is placed by his local bishop in positions of honour in his diocese.

And then, when the Vatican does finally step in and forces him to choose between politics and the priesthood, he files a $500,000 lawsuit against the pro-life news outlet whose articles the Vatican cited, accusing them of libel and of hurting his political career.

As outrageous as it sounds, this is a true story. And, sadly, it does not have a happy ending.

All told we were forced to spend over $260,000 in legal expenses fighting this SLAPP suit after Fr. Raymond Gravel filed the lawsuit almost exactly four years ago. To date, we have only been able to fundraise to cover $170,000 of that, leaving us with a heavy financial burden of some $95,000, not including the many staff hours put in by LifeSite staff into the defence effort.

Click here to donate today and help us reach our Christmas fundraising goal.

We need your help to close the book on this painful chapter of our history. We cannot do so as long as we have this financial burden hanging over us, which is hurting our ability to focus on our core mission – to promote the Culture of Life through professional news reporting.
It in December of 2010 that Fr. Raymond Gravel sued LifeSiteNews for $500,000. In those intervening years, we have been forced to dedicate countless man-hours and our already-stretched financial resources to fighting this legal harassment and abuse of the courts that threatened to cripple, and possibly even completely shut down our organization.

Now, however, we can finally announce that the lawsuit is over.

And yet, though I am relieved that this looming threat has been removed, I make the announcement with a heavy heart, since the main reason that the lawsuit has ended is the untimely death of Fr. Gravel himself earlier this fall, after a nearly year-long battle with lung cancer.

Even though Fr. Gravel aggressively pursued his lawsuit against LifeSite almost literally until his dying breath, I do not, and never have had any personal animosity towards him. Indeed I, and the rest of our staff, prayed frequently for Fr. Gravel in these past four years, and especially during his final days. We ardently pray that he found his peace with God before he died.

If anything, I am more outraged by those, especially Fr. Gravel’s bishop, who had the authority to correct Fr. Gravel and to stop his scandalous public dissent from Church teaching, but who instead allowed him to continue, and even seemed to support and praise him.

Because this lawsuit was so unjustly hostile and endangered freedom of the press and freedom of speech, we knew that we had no choice but to fight it as long as Fr. Gravel persisted. We are certain Fr. Gravel was shocked that we fought the lawsuit so effectively and for so long despite the deck being stacked against us, with the hearings taking place in Gravel’s home diocese where he was a very popular and highly influential politician, priest and media star.

Earlier this year Fr. Gravel lost his major preliminary motion to have the court strike from our defence document all the proof (including all correspondence between the Vatican and his bishop) that he was indeed a dissenting Catholic priest opposed to Catholic moral teachings. One reason he gave for his lawsuit was that we “lied” in reporting that he was not a faithful Catholic priest.

But though I dearly wish that this lawsuit never happened, I do feel that it has had some positive effects; in particular, I believe it has helped prove beyond any shadow of a doubt the critical importance of LifeSite’s work.

While Fr. Gravel was repeatedly slamming faithful Church leaders in the media, and causing widespread scandal and confusion by publicly opposing Church teaching, NO ONE, not even his own bishop, held him to account.

No one, that is...except LifeSiteNews.

And even then, all LifeSiteNews ever did was objectively and professionally report what he said and did. Yet, this straightforward reporting had a powerful effect. As we know, when the Vatican contacted Fr. Gravel’s bishop, ordering him to do something about his renegade priest, the Vatican dossier was full of LifeSite’s articles!

Ultimately Fr. Gravel chose to leave politics and to remain a priest. But though he continued to promote un-Catholic views – including, in his final days, pushing for the legalization of euthanasia – he no longer had the national platform of being a federal politician!

With your help, we can continue to do the hard work of defending the Culture of Life against the many hostile forces arrayed against it.

With this one-time, final appeal we are praying that through the generosity of LifeSite readers, our financial burdens related to the case can finally end.

Please, help us put this lawsuit behind us once and for all, and make a donation to LifeSiteNews’ Christmas Campaign today.

You can also make a donation by phone or mail. Our helpful staff would love to hear from you!

Irish Pro-Life Rally

http://www.breakingnews.ie/ireland/over-25000-attend-pro-life-rally-in-dublin-581802.html

'Over 25,000' attend Pro-Life rally in Dublin

Over 25,000 people attended a rally organised by Pro-Life campaigners in central Dublin today, according to official Garda estimates.

The 'Unite for Life' vigil took place on Merrion square with speakers including Tyrone football manager Mickey Harte.

The rally was organised to express opposition to the Government's commitment to legislate and introduce regulations to allow abortion if there is a real and substantial risk to a woman’s life, including the threat of suicide.

Mr Harte told the crowd he was "concerned" at the proposed legislation.

"Ireland is almost unique in the Western world in looking out for, and fully protecting, two patients during a pregnancy – a mother and her unborn child," Mr Harte said.

"We are here to oppose the unjust targeting of even one unborn child's life in circumstances that have nothing to do with genuine life-saving medical interventions".

He continued: "No individual or nation is perfect - we all have our faults and failings but when it comes to life before birth, we have a value system, an ethos which we should proudly share with the rest of the world."

Pro-life spokeswoman Caroline Simons said organisers were 'thrilled' with today's turnout.

"On a bitterly cold January afternoon when it was predicted that the weather would keep people away, Irish people turned out in many thousands to register their opposition to abortion legislation," Ms Simons said.

Ms Simons told the crowd that claims by the Government that abortion was needed to treat threatened suicide in pregnancy had been "completely demolished at last week’s Oireachtas hearings on abortion".

She said: "The psychiatrists who addressed the hearings were unanimous that abortion is not a treatment for suicidal ideation.

"There is no evidence whatever that suggests that abortion reduces the mental health risks of unwanted or mistimed pregnancy. But there is evidence that abortion increases the risk of future mental health problems for a significant number of women.

"If the Government legislates for abortion on the basis of the X case, this legislation would cure no woman of suicidal ideation, but it would put some women's lives at risk."

Prior to the rally the Archbishop of Dublin, Diarmuid Martin, held prayers for “the child in the womb” at St Andrew’s Church in Westland Row.

Separately, a new pro-choice group, Abortion Rights Campaign, was also established and held its first meeting in Dublin this morning.

Pro-choice campaigners also held a counter-demonstration in the capital today, with initial Garda estimates putting the attendance at around 200.L

Changed timetable for abortion bill in Ireland

From Tuesday's Irish Times on line.
Abortion Bill
It is expected the Bill that will legalise abortion in restricted circumstances will be on the priority list for the summer session.
Minister for Health James Reilly has said he expects the legislation to be enacted before the summer but many of his colleagues in the Dáil and Seanad say that his timetable is too ambitious. Chairman of the Oireachtas health committee Jerry Buttimer is holding a meeting with committee colleagues this week to finalise arrangements for writing its report on last week’s hearing from medical and legal experts as well as churches and advocacy groups.

January 19th pro-life vigil planned in Dublin

Pro-Life Articles • DFW Catholic.org

Dublin, Ireland, Jan 16, 2013 / 02:06 am (CNA/EWTN News).- A Jan. 19 pro-life vigil in Dublin aims to rally against the government's proposal to permit some abortions, warning that abortion advocates are blurring important moral distinctions in the debate.

“Time and again, when the distinction is made between current medical practice which cares for both the mother and baby and direct, intentional abortion, voters give their unambiguous support to pro-life laws,” Caroline Simons, a legal consultant for the Pro Life Campaign, said in a Jan. 14 announcement.

She said the debate over the legalization of some abortions is a “defining moment for Ireland” and Irish people need to “make their voices heard loud and clear.”

The rally will take place in Dublin’s Merrion Square Saturday at 4:30 p.m. local time. A Dec. 4 rally outside of the Dáil Eireann in Dublin drew over 10,000 people.

Simons on Jan. 15 further explained that everyone agrees women must receive life-saving treatments even if it may lead to the unintentional death of the unborn baby.

“Where the disagreement arises is that some are skilfully but unfairly using the occasion to push for an abortion regime in Ireland and are blurring the distinction between necessary medical treatments and abortion,” she said.

Directly from LifeSiteNews: double standard from Government regarding Occupy Washington and Priests for Life--Is anyone surprised?

UPDATED: Catholic priest, pro-life activists arrested outside White House protesting Obama mandate

Kathleen GilbertThu Feb 16 13:39 ESTAbortion
Co-authored with John Jalsevac
Updated: Feb. 16, 2012 at 4:48 pm EST.
February 16, 2012 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Six pro-life activists, including one Catholic priest, were arrested this morning in front of the White House while holding a peaceful prayer vigil in protest against the Obama administration’s birth control mandate. They were released shortly thereafter, after paying a $100 fine.
Fr. Denis Wilde, the Associate Director of Priests for Life, told LifeSiteNews that by their arrests the protesters hoped to send a “wake-up call” to President Obama that opposition to his mandate is not going away.
The six were arrested on a charge of “disobeying a lawful order.” The priest explained that while it is legal to hold protests in front of the White House, protesters are not allowed to remain stationary, including if they kneel down and pray.
“Occupy Wall Street protesters have been occupying federal property for months, but when we kneel in prayer, the police are called in and we are arrested,” Father Wilde said. “We knew that was the risk when we gathered today, and we will do it again regardless of the risk. What people of faith – of every faith – need to do now is stand with us.”
In addition to Fr. Wilde those arrested were Jeff White and his teenage daughters Joanna and Jayne White of Survivors, Rev. Pat Mahoney of the Christian Defense Coalition, and a local pro-lifer named John Randy Corish.
Fr. Frank Pavone, the head of Priests for Life, told LifeSiteNews.com: “The men arrested today, including our Associate Director, reveal the fact that the response to the unjust Obama mandate cannot be limited to the Courts, the Congress, and the press. It must bring us to the streets of America.”
“Over the years, the other side in this battle has tried to make the public afraid of us by painting us as arrogant, hateful, and violent. In reality, the other side should be afraid precisely because we are humble, peaceful, and prayerful, because therein lies the force that uproots injustice from society.”
A note on the Facebook page of Fr. Pavone of Priests for Life prior to the protest said that the protesters at the prayer vigil Thursday morning expected to meet with arrest, but said that “civil disobedience is called for.”
Pro-life groups including the Christian Defense Coalition, Operation Rescue, Rock for Life, Students for Life of America, and Survivors of the Abortion Holocaust were all slated to join the prayer vigil.
“The faith community can never be silent or indifferent when it comes to matters of justice, human rights and religious liberty. We want to make it clear to President Obama that Christians would rather spend time in a jail cell than be coerced into complying with an mandate that violates our religious beliefs!” said Operation Rescue in a statement Tuesday.
Obama’s mandate that all employers cover all birth control, including abortifacients like ella, and sterilizations, has united Christians from numerous denominations in an unprecedented show of opposition. Despite an “accommodation” from the Obama administration last Friday ostensibly designed to appease religious-based opposition, the protests have only increased in vehemence, with the United States Conference of Catholic bishops denouncing the “accommodation” as insufficient.
Pastor Rick Warren of Saddleback Church has said that he would “go to jail rather than cave in to a government mandate that violates what God commands us to do.” Dr. Richard Land, president of the Southern Baptist Convention’s Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission (ERLC), has also said Christians would go to jail if the mandate was not changed.
Kemper pointed out what he said was a double-standard in the police treatment of the pro-life activists: that while “Occupy people can live on federal property…these leaders cannot pray on public property” without being arrested. Kemper posted images of the protest in progress on his blog Thursday morning.

Lies and Political Illusions

Just in case any Americans are stupid enough to accept the so-called compromise, look at this reference given by Margaret on Father Z's blog. Chilling reminder of the deceitfulness surrounding us at this time.

An article entitled “Nothing But Squid Ink” at NRO’s Corner is pointing out that the “proposed regulations” just WENT INTO LAW YESTERDAY. Unchanged. Not even with Obama’s fig leaf compromise included. Money quote from the OFR.gov PDF file (p. 19): “Accordingly, the amendment to the interim final rule with comment period amending 29
CFR 2590.715-2713(a)(1)(iv) which was published in the Federal Register at 76 FR 46621-
46626 on August 3, 2011, is adopted as a final rule without change.” (my emphasis)

Those who have time check out the original source and make comments, please.
