Forth Eorlingas!

Yesterday, after speaking with certain people and forcing myself to watch the last video on the selling of baby parts, I realized that this nation is now two nations.

We are all living in a land divided so severely by a crevasse dividing true Christians from false ones and pagans, that we shall most likely never be united again.

We need to be in rescue mode-rescuing ourselves first, and then others, from the evil division created by satan.

This crevasse has come as a shock to some, but not so to others. Some Catholics seem overwhelmed with despair, and others are in denial.

But, the people of this country have allowed this crevasse to be created by evil. Those who cooperate with evil are on one side, and the People of God are on the other side.

As God told St. Catherine of Siena in the Dialogue, Christ is the only Bridge into heaven. So, too, He is the only Bridge from evil to goodness.

Living in the Land of Deniers, I am struck today that those in denial will be the first ones to fall into the darkness of the split.

I am also reminded of the great book, The Tale of Two Cities, in which Dickens makes a weak man into a hero because this man chooses love over self. We now have two cities in America. The city of satan has been firmly established on this continent and the City of God remains guarded by the faithful few. As in Dicken's book, people will have to make decisions about life, love, death, selfishness. Sometimes dire conditions help people rise above their weaknesses, and become heroes. Our heroes in Western literature have been noble, good, true.

One thinks of the horror and impossibility of the Battle of Pelennor Fields, perhaps the most poignant section of Tolkien's trilogy. Two people said to me in the last six months, "Do we have to fight? Do we always have to fight?"

"Yes," I answered, "always, while we are on this earth."

Retreat Notes on The Virtues

Father Xavier spoke of the virtues with regard to breaking demonic influences of obsession and oppression.

The virtues on which he concentrated are the cardinal virtues, again defined on this blog in both posts on virtues and posts on the way to perfection.

Father assumed that his audience knew the definitions of these, but he did emphasize some rather than others.

Prudence, temperance, justice and fortitude provide means to counter demonic influences in our lives. Father said plainly that children must be confirmed, and that too many are not being confirmed. These virtues are necessary, not only as natural virtues, according to the ancient Greeks, but as supernatural virtues given as gifts for all confirmed Catholics to use daily.

Father noted that the demons do not want to attack a person who has control over their bodies and their emotions.

There are antecedent appetites which need to be controlled. Father gave the example of people sleeping too much. If one gives into such a pleasure, one is allowing the possibility of demonic  influences over the body. Prudence, which is right reason applied to practice, allows us to be temperate in our lives regarding food, sleep and other things, perhaps connected to the passions which can drive us.

The cardinal virtues inform reason, the intellective appetites, so that we can overcome sin, weaknesses, and demonic influences. Practicing the virtues also gives us confidence in fighting demonic influences. Obviously, if we are slothful, and bombarded by demons of sloth for example, the opposite virtue of temperance would be a necessary practice in our lives. Temperance is won through chastity, fasting, and abstinence, which combat demonic influences. Father emphasized the necessity in spiritual warfare for fighting demons with temperance.

The other virtues, justice, prudence and fortitude, also are necessary in combating evil in our lives.

The importance of battling daily cannot be underestimated. I came away from this retreat realizing that there is little "down time" in the effort to become perfect, to become holy. Father Xavier said to beg God for the virtues and the graces to become holy.

I am begging....And remembering that to overcome even venial sin with the virtues, one should do the opposite of the fault or vice.

One more point which slightly overlapped with my reading of the City of God.

Father said that there are people out there building on purpose the City of Satan. We cannot deny this.
Becoming holy means being a member of the Church Militant.

End of retreat notes....

A REAL Danger

Thanks to a reader who sent this story--The British papers reported last week that ouija boards were the in present this Christmas. Most articles make fun of the ouija board and deny any spiritual connection.

As someone who has a close friend who was an exorcist for almost forty years and is now retired, I can tell you that he and others, such as Father Chad Ripperger, know from experience that the ouija board is a door to hell.

I have written on this before here..

.Etheldredasplace: Conversations on Conscience Three

Someone had brought an Ouija board and set it up during "relaxation" time. A small group started to play with it. This was in the late sixties, and no one seemed to be familiar with this board, and some were curious. Thankfully ...

The first one is obvious-the Ouija board. This is a direct door to the occult. So is Dungeons and Dragons and World of Warcraft. Demons are chained to particular elements and symbols and when the door is open, they enter ...

I was one line and I saw a pink Ouija board for little girls for sale. I was astounded. The other things I saw were Harry Potter games and Twilight paraphernalia in a toy section of a drug store near things for little girls, like Hello ...

Why these are popular for gifts on the day that Christ, who conquered sin and death, came to us as a baby defies the imagination. Sadly, the secular world scorns any association with demons as psychological influences. Sorry, not true, and an indication of the lack of discernment...the first article's author thinks people are trying to contact the dead. It is not the dead, but damned spirits people contact.

Here are snippets from some newspapers.

http://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/christmas/gifts/ouija-boards-are-the-musthave-gift-this-christmas-fuelled-by-a-schlock-horror-film-9885749.html

Ouija boards are flying themselves off shelves and under trees this Christmas, according to trends data released by Google. The company has recorded a 300 per cent increase in searches for the spirit-bothering devices, fuelled by a terrible movie that was effectively a feature-length ad for a board game, an appearance on The Archers, and the Victorian belief that if the dead could speak, they would use a plank of a wood and the alphabet.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/newsbysector/retailandconsumer/11251852/Black-Friday-2014-Ouija-boards-are-so-popular-they-could-sell-out-says-Google.html

If you have time, listen to the series on spiritual warfare on Fr. Ripperger's website.

Those people who made the movie may be responsible for the demonic obsession, oppression or even possession of souls. This type of movie is not "neutral", as there is no neutrality in the spiritual world.

And, from an exorcist:

http://www.catholicmessenger.net/2011/05/msgr-mottet-the-dioceses-exorcist-reflects-on-healing-ministry/

Surveys show that the majority of Protestant theologians and roughly 40 percent of Catholic theologians believe that the devil is a figment of the imagination, Msgr. Mottet said. They fail to see that satanic influences — such as satanic cults, Ouija boards and other occult games – are having a devastating impact on young people, the priest said. Break-down of the family and societal mores serve as an invitation to Satan entering people’s lives, he believes.

and

http://www.catholicherald.co.uk/commentandblogs/2014/11/03/playing-with-a-ouija-board-isnt-funny-its-stupid-and-dangerous/

and even some Church of England ministers know the danger....

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2855439/Sales-Ouija-boards-300-threatening-Christmas-buy-despite-Church-England-warning.html

Remember, satan wants you to join him for all eternity in hell and he does not care how you get there.

Follow Up Commentary on Garrigou-Lagrange

St.Catherine with Demons
There is much confusion on demonic possession and obsession, which is why I put the two long excerpts from Garrigou-Lagrange on the blog on Saturday.

One must make distinctions, which, sadly, Catholics who are not working in order with the Church confuse. I have cautioned about so called charismatic deliverance teams before on this blog many times.

Obsession can occur for several reasons: family history of sin; personal sin; or God allowing a holy person to be tested for further growth in holiness. Many saints were subjected to horrible obsessions in order to become perfect.

One can discern the difference easily. But, if one feels "tormented", the beginning of freedom is in the confessional.

Possession is either brought about by years of serious sin, or by the giving of an innocent person over to evil. God allows possession for His great glory, but some people choose it by following witchcraft, satanism, years of drug abuse and so on.

As Fr. Ripperger notes in his talks, the hardest possessions to break are those when a child has been given over for satanic use. Sadly, this is a real thing which happens, as some of you know.

The reason I am posting and discussing this topic is that many Catholics are encountering difficulties in proceeding on the path of perfection. They seem to get so far and then hit blockages which seem out of their control.

All freedom from obsessions begins with repentance of certain sins. Once a person is in sanctifying grace, that person can speak with a priest about the persistence of spiritual and physical obsessions.

Sometimes, all it takes it weekly Adoration and frequent even daily Mass, if possible. Adoration is essential to freedom.

But, one cannot expect to be free of obsessions unless one repents of serious sins.

Of course, real possession, which is rare, but increasing, takes a Catholic priest exorcist to deal with the demonic presence.

I think Garrigou-Lagrange and Fr Ripperger's talks, as well as his book, are the best sources for discerning obsessions or possession.

As Father Ripperger notes several times, the devil is not under every rock, just every other rock.

to be continued...

Garrigou-Lagrange on Obsession

Nothing like Thomistic training to make a teacher present clear ideas.

Commentary will be later in the day.

OBSESSION
Obsession is a series of temptations that are more violent and prolonged than ordinary temptations. Rarely does the devil act only on the exterior senses; more frequently, through the imagination; he provokes lively impressions of the sensible appetites in order to trouble the soul. He may act on the sight by loathsome apparitions or, on the contrary, seductive apparitions; (4) on the hearing, by making a racket (5) or by making the person hear blasphemous or obscene words; (6) on the touch, by inflicting blows or by embraces of a nature to lead to evil.(7) There are cases in which these apparitions are not corporeal, but imaginary or produced, like hallucination, by nervous overexcitement.
The direct action of the devil on the imagination, memory, and passions, may produce obsessing images, which persist in spite of energetic efforts and which lead to anger, to very lively antipathies, or to dangerous affections, or again to discouragement accompanied by anguish. Those whom the enemy of good persecutes in this way feel at times that their imagination is as if bound by thick shadows, and that over their heart rests a weight which oppresses them. This powerlessness is entirely different from that proceeding from the divine action which, in bestowing infused contemplation, renders discursive meditation more or less impracticable. The enemy of God, in his jealous desire to imitate the divine action, seeks to cause the effect of God's action to deviate, in such a way that, in the passive purifications, the soul occasionally finds itself between the special action of God, which inclines it to a spiritual life more freed from the senses, and an inverse action, which in its way strikes it with powerlessness in order to cause the effect of the divine action to deviate and to throw the soul into utter confusion.
If the temptations of which we are speaking are sudden, violent, and persistent, and no illness explains them, a special influence of the devil may be seen in them.
Obsession may be so strong that it deserves the name of diabolical siege. Scaramelli says: "In the diabolical siege, the devil stays near the person whom he besieges as a captain does near a place which he surrounds closely with his troops. But he has no stable and permanent power over the body of the obsessed person (which occurs only in possession); and once the time of purification is ended, the devil himself raises the siege and goes off without exorcisms, without injunction." (8)
By what sign may one recognize that obsession is related to the passive purification of the senses? Obsession may be linked with the passive purification of the senses if the obsessed person works seriously at his perfection, in particular if he is humble, obedient, charitable, and if he has the three signs of the night of the senses indicated by St. John of the Cross. On the other hand, astute, very subtle persons may, for interested motives, seek to make themselves pass for victims of the devil, in such a way especially as to excuse excessively compromising exterior faults which they commit.

Caution Yet Again, Part Three

I think the big sin behind the misunderstandings about spiritual warfare is the lack of humility.

If one is not humble, if one is not pursuing holiness hourly in some way, even with small prayers, one will fall into sins of curiosity and pride, thinking one can deal with things which may not even be our business.

Because of the prevalence of the occult, more and more people are being possessed. One can listen to Fr. Ripperger on this.

As we are all sinners, as we have defects and imperfections, satan will use anything against us, including past sins.

Humility is the needed virtue for all growth and for all spiritual warfare.

If you only have time for one talk, I recommend this one. And, if you are being stubborn and still do not see the evil in Harry Potter, listen to 1.08.36 on or so.

Caution Yet Again, Part Two

Do you want the real deal on spiritual warfare? Either pay the fee on the website here or say one decade of the rosary for each talk.

Spiritual Warfare:

Caution, Yet Again, Part One

If one suspects demonic influence in one's life, one should not go to these spurious healing Masses where people who are not even necessarily in sanctifying grace, because they are not living orthodox Catholic lives, touch and pray over people.

I have written about this before and need to again.

First of all, years ago, I went to one meeting with a so-called healing team, and some of the women at the table believed in women priests and contraception. I was asked to give a talk by the diocesan exorcist, and only succeeded in making all but three people on the fourteen person team angry. What was my subject? Personal perfection, personal holiness and purgation....few wanted to face their own conversion and unorthodoxy.

Problem one.

Problem two, only those who are free of evil themselves and are fasting, seriously, and trained in the now regular conferences under such priests as Fr. Chad Ripperger, and whose authority comes directly from a bishop should be on teams. In other words, all other teams are not under the authority of the Church. There is no such thing as carte blanche permission for healing teams. Most people have not been trained by exorcists and most meetings are not under authority.

Problem three, if one attempts to deal with demonic influences without a spiritual director who is a priest, who knows what he is doing, one will get beat up, literally and invite more demonic attention

Problem four, one cannot deal with oppression and obsessions, without a trained priest spiritual director and even a trained Catholic, Thomistic counselor. There are too many untrained, unprofessional people who are counseling and praying over people and this is scary. They actually do more harm than good, and if they are charging money for their services of "healing", they are not on the "right side". One should pay, of course, for a professional psychologist or psychiatrist but not some unprofessional self-proclaimed healer. This scenario is a huge scandal in both Ireland and England, where some "counselors" have training in New Age techniques and are not under any authority of the bishop.

Problem five, possessions need a Catholic priest exorcist, period.

Problem six, one can deliver one's self from obsessions and oppressions but ONLY under a spiritual director, possibly a professional counselor as well, and with frequent Mass and weekly Adoration. To pretend one can do what can take years at a one shot healing prayer meeting is beyond words "daft".

Imagine putting the health of your body under those who were quacks. Your soul is much more important. I have written before that the charismatic renewal has done great damage in the Church pushing for home-made, protestant-based methods of healing, deliverance, exorcism.

Do not believe much of what you read on the Net.

We have an expert on this whose talks are regularly available.

If you are experiencing demonic influence, first, phone the diocese and talk to the exorcist. Second, follow his advice, as you most likely do not need exorcism. Three, follow his advice but if he has none, ask if he would mind you joining the Auxilium Christianorum..

You may want to consider getting a spiritual director who is a priest first.

Most people do not need exorcisms.

Lastly, the Catholic Church has always had rules and levels of authority for spiritual warfare. If a person steps out of that authority and those rules, one is open to more demonic influence, not less.

On The Demons of The Air

This is a completely personal meditation from three Scripture passages.

When the evil angels fell with Lucifer, they were from all the levels of angels. There is a hierarchy of devils, just as there is a hierarchy of angels. Now, I want to refer to two types, which have been defined in Scripture

Catholics need to wake up and realize that daily we are all bombarded by these evil spirits who want to destroy the life of grace in us and bring us into their own misery.

The first category are the demons of the air. I do not know what level these evil ones came from, but these are all around us. I want to point out that they come through and in the air.

I am convinced that such demons have the power to come through electronic devices such as computer and especially, televisions/

Here is one passage:

Ephesians 2 Douay-Rheims

And you, when you were dead in your offences, and sins,
Wherein in time past you walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of this air, of the spirit that now worketh on the children of unbelief:
In which also we all conversed in time past, in the desires of our flesh, fulfilling the will of the flesh and of our thoughts, and were by nature children of wrath, even as the rest:
But God, (who is rich in mercy,)  for his exceeding charity wherewith he loved us,
Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together in Christ, (by whose grace you are saved,)
And hath raised us up together, and hath made us sit together in the heavenly places, through Christ Jesus.
Here is another passage from the same epistle which uses the names of two of the levels of angels, high levels, who have fallen.
Ephesians 6:10-13Douay-Rheims
10 Finally, brethren, be strengthened in the Lord, and in the might of his power.
11 Put you on the armour of God, that you may be able to stand against the deceits of the devil.
12 For our wrestling is not against flesh and blood; but against principalities and power, against the rulers of the world of this darkness, against the spirits of wickedness in the high places.
13 Therefore take unto you the armour of God, that you may be able to resist in the evil day, and to stand in all things perfect.
One must be vigilant about computer games (D and D, WoW for example) and movies and television shows regarding these demons.
Another group are the strategic demons, again, noted in Scripture.

Daniel 10 Douay-Rheims

10 In the third year of Cyrus king of the Persians, a word was revealed to Daniel surnamed Baltassar, and a true word, and great strength: and he understood the word: for there is need of understanding in a vision.
In those days I Daniel mourned the days of three weeks.
I ate no desirable bread, and neither flesh, nor wine entered into my mouth, neither was I anointed with ointment: till the days of three weeks were accomplished.
And in the four and twentieth day of the first month I was by the great river which is the Tigris.
And I lifted up my eyes, and I saw: and behold a man clothed in linen, and his loins were girded with the finest gold:
And his body was like the chrysolite, and his face as the appearance of lightning, and his eyes as a burning lamp: and his arms, and all downward even to the feet, like in appearance to glittering brass: and the voice of his word like the voice of a multitude.
And I Daniel alone saw the vision: for the men that were with me saw it not: but an exceeding great terror fell upon them, and they fled away, and hid themselves.
And I being left alone saw this great vision: and there remained no strength in me, and the appearance of my countenance was changed in me, and I fainted away, and retained no strength.
And I heard the voice of his words: and when I heard, I lay in a consternation, upon my face, and my face was close to the ground.
10 And behold a hand touched me, and lifted me up upon my knees, and upon the joints of my hands.
11 And he said to me: Daniel, thou man of desires, understand the words that I speak to thee, and stand upright: for I am sent now to thee. And when he had said this word to me, I stood trembling.
12 And he said to me: Fear not, Daniel: for from the first day that thou didst set thy heart to understand, to afflict thyself in the sight of thy God, thy words have been heard: and I am come for thy words.
13 But the prince of the kingdom of the Persians resisted me one and twenty days: and behold Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me, and I remained there by the king of the Persians.
14 But I am come to teach thee what things shall befall thy people in the latter days, for as yet the vision is for days.
15 And when he was speaking such words to me, I cast down my countenance to the ground, and held my peace.
16 And behold, as it were the likeness of a son of man touched my lips: then I opened my mouth, and spoke, and said to him that stood before me: O my Lord, at the sight of thee my joints are loosed, and no strength hath remained in me.
17 And how can the servant of my lord speak with my lord? for no strength remaineth in me, moreover my breath is stopped.
18 Therefore he that looked like a man touched me again, and strengthened me.
19 And he said: Fear not, O man of desires, peace be to thee: take courage and be strong. And when he spoke to me, I grew strong: and I said: Speak, O my lord, for thou hast strengthened me.
20 And he said: Dost thou know wherefore I am come to thee? and now I will return, to fight against the prince of the Persians. When I went forth, there appeared the prince of the Greeks coming.
21 But I will tell thee what is set down in the scripture of truth: and none is my helper in all these things, but Michael your prince.
What is in Scripture is true, so here we have two specific demons, one called the Prince of Persia (modern day Iran) keeping a special messenger from God, most likely Gabriel, from coming, until Michael came and helped.
Michael, as guardian of the Jewish people, was hindered at this time.
There is also, in addition, a Prince of the Greeks. That these good angels fought literally with the bad ones seems to indicate that the bad ones were strategically fighting over two countries, Greece and Persia.
Why some countries have good angels and some bad fighting over them, in the air, is a mystery, unless one thinks that these fell with Lucifer in their pride and in their role. An angel is his role. Gabriel is the Messenger of God, Raphael is the Healing of God, and Michael, the Guardian-Fighter.
Note the language in these passages.
I write of these as I have felt in the past and now that different areas have different spiritual characters.
Some people have said this of New York City or Las Vegas, that they "sensed the evil". Others have felt or sensed this about Chicago or other places.
As a child, certain places struck me as evil or good.
I think in these times of chaos, we need to ask God to make keen the gift of discernment, to protect ourselves and our families from evil. We need to avoid the demons of the air.

If you are traveling and find yourself in a place where is seems hard to pray, there could be demonic influence in that area. Remember where you can pray easily, or at least with some ease and not as if in a battle zone. Sometimes one feels blocks, or even a strange cloudiness over an area. I had a strange experience like this flying into Ireland for the first time, and in a certain place in Illinois, and in a certain place in New York State.

Stay in the state of grace. Pray. Keep close to the sacraments and pray the rosary-the weapons of our "side".

On Prayers Against Demons

Father Chad Ripperger has many talks on his site, which I have featured here many times on this blog.

He also has begun both the group called Auxilium Christianorum, found here at http://www.auxiliumchristianorum.org/ and the Third Order, The Society of The Most Sorrowful Mother, found here, http://www.dolorans.com/

Now, if you have a spiritual director, ask that priest first before joining. If you do not, just write to the website and inquire.

There is much confusion about the use of prayers against demons. One may pray for one's self and one's family. That is it. Lay people cannot pray over others for deliverance or pray at healing Masses. Only priest exorcists can do this.

However, parents and husbands have authority in families, as would a single mom or a mom whose husband is not taking authority over a situation.

For example, if a child decides to break away from some habit of evil and goes to confession, the parents should encourage that decision and take the child to confession. A parent who is blinded by sin may disagree with the other parent, but the duty of the parent who sees the sin is to help the child break out of that habit.

Therefore, authority is given to both parents, to husbands and then to wives.

Husbands are the spiritual leaders of the family, but if a husband neglects his duty, the wife must lead if there are children.

Too many husbands abdicate their priestly role in the family.

Too many wives give in to unbelieving or disobedient husbands.

We can never cooperate with evil.

Sometimes women are afraid to confront husbands and sometimes husbands are afraid to confront a wife about sin.

God gave husband and wife to each other to lead each other to heaven.

If the road to perfection seems particularly rocky in a family, perhaps there are blockages.

The Auxilium Christianorum can help.

The Society of the Most Sorrowful Mother is another possibility in the Third Order.

Please consider these groups if there are blockages in your self or family.

Yet another blog on doors to the demonic

The great Blessed Columba Marmion wrote that when the Three Kings came to Christ, the idolatry of demons ended, as the beginning of the Reign of Christ showed the world who was really God. Marmion noted that the paganism of the old world, which in most cases was demonic, came to a end. But, in recent times, people have chosen to revisit the demonic on purpose. They have chosen the old demon-idols of the past, an action, a choice, which is spiritual death, as getting into the occult is a serious mortal sin.

The ignorance of the past is gone.

Sadly, in Great Britain, I have never heard the types of talks or read books by British Catholic exorcists, which help the average lay person with discernment. These comments come out of a conversation with a dear British friend of mine who wanted more clarification on his kids' games.

Thankfully, most exorcists I have had the privilege to speak with or, at least, read their books are in agreement about certain doors to the demonic. Some of these doors are being discussed at meetings and training centers for exorcists.

Thankfully, again, these doors do not have to be open.

Here are a list of the main doors which many youth and older people open and then become either obsessed, oppressed, or even possessed by demonic activity.

The first one is obvious-the Ouija board. This is a direct door to the occult. So is Dungeons and Dragons and World of Warcraft. Demons are chained to particular elements and symbols and when the door is open, they enter into a person or situation.

If a person has a proclivity to lust, the game may weakened the will, and even cause further oppression from a spirit of lust, but the direct door is different.

Such things as suicidal and death desires can come into a person by playing these games, as well as a blunting of discernment. Other demonic influences can result as well.

Some types of demonic activity is locked into families and these locks must be broken.

Creators of certain games which are direct doors either wanted to spread the occult or were just plain malicious, or wanted to become very wealthy.

Listen to the fssp priests on this. I have listened to several talks now, although I knew D and D was bad even as a board game way back in 1983. And, I knew WoW was also a door when I first came across it in 2007.

Not all computer games are doors to the demonic world, but some are. Most are addictive, however, which is another problem. Some cause violent feelings and weaken boundaries, but that is another problem

If your children are engaged in the above mentioned, please use your authority as a parent to deal with these.
