Father Xavier One More Time

The reference to memory involves the purification of the imagination, which I have written into the perfection series.

First of all, stop putting things into your imagination which are evil. Remember, things are either good or bad, there is no neutral in the spiritual life.

Second, use custody of the eyes and ears.

Third, control curiosity and see my posts on this and some reposts.

Fourth, ask God to enter into your memory to purify it and take away images. Images are used by demons to tempt us and remind us of past sins.

Today's Gospel refers to not even committing venial sins, which also feed our imagination as well.

Discernment Part Three

Two of my male friends have been complaining to me of lazy priests in their parishes or nearby ones.

Sloth is a common sin among us. See my posts below.

Here is Garrigou-Lagrange on this point.

In the letter of Fr. de Paredes, General of the Order of Preachers in the year 1926, which is to be found at the beginning of the new edition of the Constitutions, the following description is given of the spirit of human nature (p. 20): "Although a man's holiness is the result of God's grace working in his soul, it presupposes on our part a long and difficult process of purification and transformation of everything within us, until we have destroyed completely the old self which is corrupted by the desires of the flesh and put on the new self 'which is created in God's image, justified and sanctified through the truth.' Hence the need for the spirit of obedience, self-denial, and sacrifice with which we must all observe these rules perseveringly and to the letter . . ."
In contrast: "Any human relaxation, any spirit of faintheartedness, any concession made on these matters to human considerations, any unlawful dispensation which is not based on the Constitutions, may all be considered as a deviation from duty on the part of superiors . . . and, on the part of his subjects, as a disowning of their obligation to sanctify themselves and make themselves fit instruments for carrying out their sacred ministry. Such surrender to slothfulness would make it clear that our motive in entering the religious state was not to pursue the ideal set before us by God and the Church but simply to solve the problem of life here on earth with the minimum of trouble, so that in the religious state we might be more certain of receiving all the necessities of life and the more easily provide for ourselves comforts which we might not have enjoyed in the world.



We are all called to this life of virtue...all by and in and through our baptism.

Pray for priests today to follow the way of perfection. We need holy priests, and we need holy families to raise holy priests.

Perfection Series VIII Part XXIV Venial Sin


Interesting that the numbers are down on my blog as this series is not popular. I think most Catholics do not realize that following Church politics will not get them to heaven, but learning how to pray and gain purity of heart will.

I pray that those who are obsessed with Church politics will become more focused on Christ and their own salvation. I pray for those obsessed with whether their dead pets go to heaven or not. One needs to consider whether one will get to heaven or not and how.

There is nothing we have to do but love God and love others through Him.

We need to be, as Raissa's spiritual director said, "...over-driven and eaten-up to the limit" in pursuing God's love for us.

Now, Raisssa writes at length that a deliberate venial sin halts the progress to God. One venial sin..

Again, one must not interfere with persons who have given themselves to God entirely. Raissa states the same thing as St. Francis, that God never says enough to the generous soul who opens up the soul, mind and heart. Those who are mediocre interfere with those who are trying to become saints. I see this daily.

This is why some cannot be around their families, as those people reject the hard way to perfection.

Part of this way is the elimination of venial sin.

Venial sin can be automatic habitual sin, but the sin which is done on purpose halts the way to perfection. Many Catholics believe that it is fine to continue in venial sin. It is not.

Only must be vigilant regarding venial sin. Those habitual ones most likely reveal one's predominant fault-that weakness, that flaw which causes us the most sins.

To not consider being free of venial sins is to step off the way to perfection. Here is Raissa again,

"The attachment which constitutes deliberate venial sin make us behave, while it lasts, as if God does not exist. And that God cannot endure! The soul has not turned away from God the matter of the sin is not grave, it has not Satan's weight of mortal sin. But the soul has not referred its joy to God--either because this joy is, in itself, sinful, or else because the soul takes its rest in the very fact of not referring it to God, in the very fact of forgetting this terrible God with all his demands. Oh, this is intolerable to God! And he does not cease, if he loves us, to tear us away from it, and he hunts us down mercilessly until he has torn us away from this attachment which is too small for our soul, and too great for the liking of his jealous love."

Such attachments could be anything, even habits of speech or laziness. The point is that each person must submit to the purgation even of venial sins. This is a dying to self, daily.

Pain and suffering bring us into the light of these venials sins, whether done on purpose or out of habit. Raissa notes that we have to take "steps of pain", with "steps of love" to become holy.

Hope, Faith, Love and The Sins Against the Holy Spirit


Even educated Catholics have fallen into error concerning free will, the formation of conscience, and sin.



Conversations today and yesterday remind me that many Catholics do not understand the sins which surround them. The false teaching in many places regarding culpability created mushy minds which cannot grasp the fact that those who choose against the Catholic Faith after having been given the opportunity to see the Truth are those who have sinned seriously. We need to pray for those who have turned their back on the Church after hearing the Gospel preached and after having been taught some of the basics, or even higher levels.

One of Newman's contemporaries said that he admired him but one could not understand how Newman could choose the Catholic Church.

Blindness? Obstinacy?

Below is a list of the sins against the Holy Spirit. Yes, people do freely choose these. To deny choice is to deny free will in these matters.

Envy of spiritual goods may be a vastly common sin, as some people who are suffering in the throes of sin refuse to repent and, therefore, hate those who are in sanctifying grace. Satan hates those in sanctifying grace. 

Obstinacy in sin forms a huge blockage, as one has been told the truth of sin and repentance, but one chooses to go against such teaching. 

Why a person is obstinate may be for simple reasons, like wanting one's own way, or wanting to be popular.

Final impenitence denies the fact that God desires all the be saved. 

Some of the sins against hope are presumption and despair.


These are sins against the Holy Spirit directly, as one turns away from Truth to listen to the devil, the world, or the flesh.

If one knows the Truth and turns against it, this sin is a serious mortal sin, depriving the mind of discernment and the soul of grace.



THE SIX SINS AGAINST THE HOLY SPIRIT

1. Presumption of God's mercy.
2. Despair.
3. Impugning the known truth.
4. Envy at another's spiritual good.
5. Obstinacy in sin.
6. Final impenitence.

Searching for Divine Love or Self-Love?

Recently, I have been distressed by a good priest's emphasis on mortal sins needing to be confessed, but not necessarily venial sins. Venial sins chip away at the good intentions a Catholic may have regarding repentance. And, venial sins impede the way of perfection.

How can one enter seriously on the road to holiness without considering one's venial sins, which are impediments to perfection? How can one enter into purgation without admitting that these supposedly small sins do not affect one's discernment?

The will is weakened by venial sins. And, we cannot become saints if we tolerate these sins, as these are huge stumbling blocks for the use of the virtues and gifts of the Spirit.

Venial sins form walls and allow for the continuation of egotism. Venial sins reveal areas of self-love which must end before Christ allows us to experience the fullness of His love. Otherwise, we would misuse this love and merely feed ourselves, instead of the Church.




The Catechism of the Catholic Church states this:

CCC

1863 Venial sin weakens charity; it manifests a disordered affection for created goods; it impedes the soul's progress in the exercise of the virtues and the practice of the moral good; it merits temporal punishment. Deliberate and unrepented venial sin disposes us little by little to commit mortal sin. However venial sin does not break the covenant with God. With God's grace it is humanly reparable. "Venial sin does not deprive the sinner of sanctifying grace, friendship with God, charity, and consequently eternal happiness."134
