"In a little under a week people from all over Ireland will converge on Belfast for the 8th annual Rally for Life. The rally will set-off from Custom House Square at 2pm, 5th July. As always it promises to be an enjoyable event for all the family.Here are videos of the 2012 and 2013 rallies:
Last July the rally brought the centre of Dublin to a standstill as an estimated 60,000 people turned out to protest against the Irish governments plans to legalise abortion. Despite this unprecedented level of public opposition the Irish abortion law, the Protection of Life During Pregnancy Act (sic), came into effect on 1st January this year. Experience shows that when abortion is legalised it quickly becomes acceptable to the general public. But there is never an acceptable level of abortion, either it is stopped or the killing spreads. Already there is mounting pressure on both sides of the Border to permit the abortion of children with disabilities.
The victory of the abortion lobby in Ireland was a defeat for the pro-life movement globally. The politicians and abortion advocates are now watching how we react. They're looking for signs that we will simply give-up and go away so they can get on with legalising abortion on demand. If the people who came on to the streets last year don't want to see a further expansion of abortion in Ireland they cannot afford to stay at home Saturday 5th July."

In a solemn ceremony yesterday evening, Archbishop Andre Joseph Leonard, Primate of Belgium, consecrated the Belgian Provinces to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, celebrated Mass in the Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Brussels after which he led a holy hour of Eucharistic Adoration during which confession was available.
Unfortunately I could not understand his homily but I understand that
Archbp Leonard has a great devotion to the Mass and has especially promoted prayers and sacrifice to heal the hearts of men and woman through the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary.
He has been a courageous real leader in the areas of life, marriage and family and has attracted many to the priesthood and religious life by his witness to the priestly vocation.
The Archbishop has been viciously attacked in the media but also in person, food thrown at him, doused with water, etc. He just prays for his attackers.
I spoke to people at the consecration and they were all telling me of their love for this humble prelate and that he has been a great gift to the Church in Belgium
Pray for him.

Back to Basics
Garrigou-Lagrange reminds us of some basic truths:
Because God is intelligent and good, he gives all people the
grace of salvation. Natural law tends to a rational end. Our natural end is
heaven or hell, with rewards of punishments in the afterlife.
Whether people believe in the afterlife or not does not
change the truth. The problem with many Catholics is that they simply do not
believe. They have lost faith. They do not see that their lives have a purpose
in this life and in the next. They think all religions are the same, or that
the fullness of truth is not in the Catholic Church, but in some odd
pan-religion.
Catholics no longer think like Catholics for the most part,
but as Protestants. Some have a rebellious spirit which means they think it is
right and good to contradict Church teaching.
Few understand obedience.
When will Catholics understand that the road to perfection
is locked with a gate marked, “Orthodoxy”.
Orthodoxy is rational.
Orthodoxy is not arcane or hidden knowledge, but free and
not difficult to discover.
Orthodoxy clears the mind, the soul, the heart so that one
can receive grace to step onto the road to holiness.
Orthodoxy is the foundation for the life of virtues and the
fruition of the gifts of the spirit.
Basic truths from a great mind…
Perfection Series II: Moses And Elijah
Over the past three years, I have written on perfection and
the seeking of perfection. Some people have thought that this great search is
optional. Others have thought it is impossible.
Some people think is it a selfish endeavor (?), as if the
seeking of perfection is merely for self-help, or some personal gain.
No, the pursuit of perfection is the pursuit for God, Who Is
Perfection. We become like God, participating in the Divine Nature, through
grace. When we seek perfection, we are seeking God.
I am meditating on Moses and Elijah today.
When Moses had to flee from Egypt
Before the Presence of God in the Burning Bush, Moses was
faced with his own imperfections, his own limitations. This encounter with God
began a long working out of Moses’ perfection.
We tend to think of Moses’ activity and role in freeing the
people from Egypt
When Moses had to return time after time to speak with
Pharaoh, Moses had to learn to rely on God more and more. He spent hours in
prayer, listening, trying to understand the plan of God, which he finally did.
In Sinai, Moses became more and more perfected. He was
separated for some time from his wife.
The Jewish tradition, and I accept this, is that Moses, once having
encountered the Living God, chose a celibate life.
He become God’s own person, and in that process, became not
only a great friend of God, but more and more like God.
By the time Moses walked up the mountain to receive the
Commandments, He was in a state of Illumination and then Union
with God. In the Jewish tradition, when
Moses died, St. Michael and Satan fought over his body. Why? Why was the body
never found?
Moses appeared with Christ in the Transfiguration with the
prophet Elijah, who left this earth in a fiery chariot. Therefore, Moses was in
heaven body and soul. This could only have happened if Moses, through
purgation, reached a height of perfection which allowed this unusual privilege.
The Transfiguration reveals Christ in glory, with Moses and
Elijah. Those two men had to be in glory to join Christ.
The road to perfection varies with each person. The road to
perfection involves purification of the senses and the soul. That these two men
were present on Mount
Tabor
These men had found God, and they had been found by God, as
examples for us on the road to perfection.
Their entire lives were centered on the One they loved. God called Moses and Elijah to reach a level
of perfection, to share in the Divine Nature is a unique and special manner.
This level of perfection is union with God as much as a
person can experience on this earth. That these two men were taken up to heaven
body and soul also makes us think of our own destiny, which is eternal life,
finally when our souls and bodies are united.
The road to perfection is not a self-centered focus, but the
seeking of Love, Who Is a Person.
The seeking of perfection is the seeking for God Himself.
The Transfiguration was an event not merely for Peter,
James, and John, but for us, who have been given sanctifying grace, just as
Moses and Elijah were granted a special grace.
Now, this grace is not only for two or three select men or
women, but for all. This is God’s desire that all men and women are saved, that
they all respond to grace. Not all will do so, which is their tragedy.
Garrigou-Lagrange writes that the seeking of perfection, which is our job on earth, takes daily focus.
Do not let moments pass by and pay attention to graces, daily.
The Turning of The Tide
We are witnessing the passing of an era. There is, perhaps
for the first time in history, four generations who simply do not understand
each other and who have completely different foci of being.
At the top, are the members of the generation who lived through
World War II and many who fought in that war. These people totally believe in
the American Dream and have great investment in America
The next generation are the Boomers, who have had the
benefit of classical education and who are much more individualistic than their
parents. They still have confidence, but are losing this in the new world
order, which some see coming. Many who never thought they would live in
poverty, as they are highly education, do so now. This generation has watched
the implosion and have not trusted governments since the Viet Nam War.
Following them are the most conformist of all generations,
the Me Generation or Gen X. They grew up in very small families, unlike the
Boomers, and had it all from Day One.
They are the generation of entitlement and experienced the
dumbing down of education and most cultural norms. They go with the flow and
seem to be the most consumerist, as well as materialistic.
The generation at the bottom of this list, the Millennials,
have proven to be the most individualistic and introverted of any generation in
the last one hundred years. They grew up in broken families, or families of one
or two, have individualistic tendencies, and see the rot. 40% of this
generation in the States are minorities, mostly Latinos and Latinas, with a
desire to break with their Gen X parents, who they see as living shallow and
unfilled, as well as, tragically, uncommitted lives.
All these people do not communicate, or if so, with
difficulty. The WWII generation does not understand the Boomers, or the
Millenials, and in some ways, can identify with the Gen Xers more readily, as
both generations think that things and money will make them happy.
The Boomers see that these things do not, as many of their
members live in poverty.
The Millennials believe that the world will see a great catastrophe
and are not into global government, despite loving global communication.
Sadly, these people do not talk to each other about real
things. As long as conversations dwell on things and status, some people will
be marginalized.
Consumerism is the drug of Americans, and the Gen Xers and
WWII generation still run after the Golden Calf, the fleshpots of Egypt America
Herein is one great difference among these generations. The
adoration of the atheistic scientists can be seen on television and in popular
magazines. This gross idolatry of those who are useful because they are in the
newer sciences separates the Millennials from the Gen Xers.
Theology and philosophy might not be making a huge comeback,
as now, the largest growing group of graduating college seniors are either in
business or in the sciences.
But, the younger ones are getting more interested in
rationality, in ideas, in discovering who they are and where they are going.
The tide may be changing, not a huge tide, but one
nonetheless.
Perfection Series II: Providence
Garrigou-Lagrange may be the greatest Thomist of the 20th
Century. His book, Providence
The book is a meditation on God, Who He Is. The author’s
starting point in the long discussion on providence is the understanding, as
far as we can now, of the Nature of God and the nature of human beings.
I have taken so many notes on this book, I really do not
know where to begin.
Let me concentrate on one idea today. Garrigou-Lagrange
writes that holiness is the life of grace in its perfection.
As I have written many posts on grace, one can follow the
tags on those sections. The Dominican notes that sanctifying grace is the
participation in the Divine Nature. Knowing this, how can anything turn against
grace, freely?
Garrigou-Lagrange makes it clear that it is completely
rational to trust in God and to follow Him. So why is it that more people do
not follow God, if we are all rational human beings? How is it that humans more
and more turn against natural law and their own human consciences?
The fulfillment of our desire is only God. Love is the
answer to all we really need.
Garrigou-Lagrange reminds us that God has a right to be
loved by us.
We seek the real good, we desire more than we can see and
find on this earth. The entire argument for God involves not only His
Attributes, but an understanding of our won nature as human.
As I wrote last year on another blog, the new evangelization
must start with the basic questions-who is man, who is woman, where are we
going, what is the end of life, why do we exist and so on.
But, in order to evangelize at this level, one must have
some knowledge of self and Who God Is.
Herein lies the problem….

Just wondering...
I am, as usual, sitting in a coffee shop. People around me are talking about the damage and flooding from the storms.

Lack of Holy Priests
Unless one finds such a priest in the confessional, one is hard-put to do all one can to be holy.
How many priests, even so-called Latin Mass priests follow the road to holiness themselves?
Only those priests can lead us.
Too few are willing to lead the crowd and become holy.
Holiness is, by definition, a lonely battle. One must keep focused on Christ Crucified.

"O dearest daughter! Those miserable persons about whom I spoke to you have no consideration for themselves. If they had, they wouldn’t fall into so many vices, but would live like virtuous persons, who prefer death rather than offend Me, staining their soul or belittling the dignity to which I have raised them, but on the contrary, they increase their souls’ dignity and beauty. The dignity itself of the priest is not increased by virtue nor diminished by any sin, as I have told you. But virtues are an embellishment and give added dignity to the soul beyond what it possesses from the beginning, when I created it in my image and likeness. Those who live thus, know the truth of my goodness, their beauty and dignity, because pride and self-love have not blinded them nor taken away the light of reason. Not having this self-love, they love Me and desire the salvation of souls. But these spoiled persons, completely deprived of light, calmly pass from vice to vice, until they fall into the pit.
They have turned the temple of their soul and the holy Church, which is a garden, into a stable for animals. O dearest daughter! How abominable for Me that their dwellings which ought to be lodging for those who serve Me and for the poor, a place to have as a wife their breviary, and as children the books of Sacred Scripture, to delight in them in order to exhort their neighbour to lead a holy life, but quite to the contrary have turned them into a den of unchaste and wicked persons!
Their spouse is not the breviary. They rather treat this breviary-spouse like an adulterous wife. A devil in the form of a woman’s body unchastely lives with him. His herd of children make up his books, and he shamelessly takes delight in these offspring begotten so indecently and wickedly.
At Easter and solemn Days when he should give glory and praise to My Name with the divine Office and offer Me the incense of humble and devout actions, he spends at gaming and entertainment with these creatures of the devil and has a good time with the laity hunting, as if he were just another lay person or courtier.
O wretched man, to what a level you have dropped! What you ought to hunt are souls for the glory and praise of My Name and be in the garden of the Holy Church, and not to go hunting through the woods. But you have become a beast; within you have the beasts of many mortal sins. For that reason, you are a hunter of beasts and the orchard of your soul is full of weeds and thorns, since you have acquired a liking for barren land seeking wild beasts. Be ashamed and consider your sins. You have cause to be ashamed wherever you turn. But you are not ashamed, because you have lost the holy and true fear of Me. Like the prostitute, who has lost shame, you will brag about your worldly position, your numerous family and your numerous children.
And if you do not have them, you try to have them so to be your heirs. You are a highwayman and a thief, because you know perfectly well you cannot bequeath your wealth to them; your heirs are the poor and the Holy Church.
O incarnate devil, spirit without light! You seek what you ought not seek. You boast and brag about what ought to be for you motive of confusion and shame before Me, who see the innermost of your heart, and before creatures. You are truly blind and the horns of your pride do not permit you to recognize your own blindness.
O dearest daughter! I have placed you on the bridge of the doctrine of my truth so that he might serve you, o pilgrims, and administer you the sacraments of the holy Church, but he stays in the miserable river below the bridge immersed in the pleasures and miseries of the world. There he exercises his ministry, without noticing the wave that drags him to death and he goes with the devils, his masters, whom he has served and by whom he has been openly guided, along the river. If he does not amend his life, he will be eternally condemned with great reprimand and reproach, that your tongue would be incapable of referring. And he, due to his priestly office, much more than any other lay person. For this reason the same sin is punished more in him than in one who would have stayed in the world. At the moment of death his enemies will accuse him more terribly, as I have told you.

O God, You choose the frail and ignorant to confound the wise and mighty. We beseech You to raise up in our times men and women, who following St. Catherine’s example, are full of ardent love for the Church and the Pope. On Habits
Virtue is a habit, built over time. All the virtues are given, but they have to be "practiced."
They just do not pop up in old age, or in a disaster, or when one is seriously ill.
Virtues must be learnt early, as in childhood and as many readers know, I have a long series on virtue on this blog.
I have been spending time with many elderly people in the past few days. Some have lives now which reflect a life of practicing virtues. Others do not. Others have made habits of selfishness, complaining, unforgiveness.
One cannot "rage" into the night.
As much as I love the poetry of Dylan Thomas, I disagree with his famous poem. He missed the point, which is that we must prepare AT ALL TIMES to die.
Thinking on the Four Last Things is necessary.

Though wise men at their end know dark is right,

I am reading Garrigou-Lagrange's Providence again. It is better the second time and I am reading it at an
older age.
Makes a huge difference.
I highly recommend this if you need a book to give an agnostic or atheist.
Will write about it in detail later when I am not so restricted as to online time.

Time
I know two prominent bloggers who have blogged for years,
who have stopped. I have some friends who are no longer “on twitter”. I have
two other friends who no longer read blogs or comment.
These good people are heeding the call to reflection and
silence. We all know that being on the social networks on the computer can be
addictive. One must choose to be detached, unless one has a job which is
necessary for information, like journalism or teaching.
The call to more silence demands turning off the radio, TV,
and avoiding mindless talk. On this blog, there are so many posts on silence,
which you could read those happily for a long time.
And, the featured saints on this blog, such as the Doctors
of the Church and the mystics, guide us to reflection.
I remind all of the great difference between meditation,
which is Scripture based and contemplation, of which there are two kinds;
active and passive.
Active contemplation forms part of the beginners’ routes to
holiness. Passive contemplation is a gift for the proficient. Again, all these
definitions and guides are found in the perfection series.
I am still in the state of surprise, even shock, concerning
the majority of American Catholics who never reflect, never read Scripture
daily, and have no knowledge of the Divine Office. Why Catholics ignore all the
gifts found in the Church’s Tradition of prayer and guidance is a mystery. In
this area, which I am about to leave, Catholics prefer heretical New Age
methods such as “centering prayer”, “yoga” and “maze walks”. These people will
never find God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Ghost, nor will they
become perfect.
How sad, for those who stand in the fertile ground of the
life of prayer of the saints in the Catholic Church, to seek things which are
beneath and even demonic.
Pray for those who deceive themselves and lose discernment.
Stick with those who have gone before us, and who are in
heaven and ignore those who can only lead to hell.
I could not post on Monday in the afternoon as this area was
hit by severe weather and I could not get out. Last night, the weather was also terrible.
We had heat lightening for hours and then storms until four in the morning.
Tonight looks like it will be similar. Many thousands of people are not getting power.
Corn and wheat products will be affected, as there was an
early drought and now the deluge. Pray that people begin to realize that God is
in charge and is allowing hard times to come. People complain, but, do not stop
and reflect why things are difficult.
The number of babies slaughtered daily in this country
provides one big reason for the tribulations which are merely beginning.
We have had a SLIM victory for religious freedom and the horrible backlash is hot and heavy.
Do not get complacent, please.
Prayers
Thousands of people are without electricity in this area because of the huge storms which came through last night. Many places are flooded. Several events for July 4th in the area have been cancelled.
Pray for all those effected.
