Brazilian State Legalizes Polygamy

Natural consequence of allowing for same-sex "civil unions"

Three people have been allowed to enter into a civil union in the Brazilian state of Sao Paulo, the Telegraph reported earlier this week. Claudia do Nascimento Domingues, a public notary, granted the request for a civil union of one man and two women, saying there is nothing in law that prevents such an arrangement. The union was estabished formally three months ago but only became public this week.
“We are only recognising what has always existed. We are not inventing anything,” said Ms Domingues. “For better or worse, it doesn’t matter, but what we considered a family before isn’t necessarily what we would consider a family today.”
You can say that again. Dr Patricia Morgan, the most important sociologist specialising in family policy today, told Simon Caldwell on this site’s homepage that she was not surprised by the ruling, and pointed out that similar attempts have been made in the Netherlands. She said that the proliferation of a range of relationships that will be legally considered equalvalent to marriage was inevitable once the institution had been redefined.

"Arab Spring" Egypt shuts down last Jewish synagogue in Alexander from Spencer's Website-JihadWatch, September 2nd, 2012

Tolerance and pluralism in full flower in the new Muslim Brotherhood Egypt. "Egypt Shuts Down Last Jewish Synagogue," from the Jewish Press, September 1 (thanks to David):
For the first time in 2,000 years, there will be no Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur services at the Eliyahu Hanavi Synagogue in Alexandria in 5773, reports Daniel Greenfield in “In The Point.”
This was the last active synagogue in Egypt. The Egyptian authorities’ excuse for the shut-down, effectively outlawing High Holiday services in the country, were “security” reasons.
Levana Zamir, head of the International Association of Egyptian Jews in Israel, said: “It seems this is really the end of Jewish life in Egypt. The authorities have found a way to take over the last Jewish bastion, since all the remaining synagogues are already archaeological and tourist sites. It is very sad.”
This is yet another example of the fact that Jewish life is becoming extinct in the Muslim world.

Happy Feast of St. Gregory the Great

Deus, qui animae famuli tui Gregorii aeternae beatitudinis praemia contulisti: concede propitius; ut qui peccatorum nostrorum pondere premimur, ejus apud te precibus sublevemur. Per Dominum nostrum. Amen.

O God, who didst bestow upon the soul of Thy servant Gregory the rewards of eternal happiness; mercifully grant, that we who are oppressed by the weight of our sins, may be relieved through his intercession. Amen.

Benedictine mini-series continued-obedience

On obedience from the Rule:

The first degree of humility is obedience without delay. This becometh those who, on account of the holy subjection which they have promised, or of the fear of hell, or the glory of life everlasting, hold nothing dearer than Christ. As soon as anything hath been commanded by the Superior they permit no delay in the execution, as if the matter had been commanded by God Himself. Of these the Lord saith: "At the hearing of the ear he hath obeyed Me" (Ps 17[18]:45). And again He saith to the teachers: "He that heareth you heareth Me" (Lk 10:16).
Such as these, therefore, instantly quitting their own work and giving up their own will, with hands disengaged, and leaving unfinished what they were doing, follow up, with the ready step of obedience, the work of command with deeds; and thus, as if in the same moment, both matters -- the master's command and the disciple's finished work -- are, in the swiftness of the fear of God, speedily finished together, whereunto the desire of advancing to eternal life urgeth them. They, therefore, seize upon the narrow way whereof the Lord saith: "Narrow is the way which leadeth to life" (Mt 7:14), so that, not living according to their own desires and pleasures but walking according to the judgment and will of another, they live in monasteries, and desire an Abbot to be over them. Such as these truly live up to the maxim of the Lord in which He saith: "I came not to do My own will, but the will of Him that sent Me" (Jn 6:38).
This obedience, however, will be acceptable to God and agreeable to men then only, if what is commanded is done without hesitation, delay, lukewarmness, grumbling or complaint, because the obedience which is rendered to Superiors is rendered to God. For He Himself hath said: "He that heareth you heareth Me" (Lk 10:16). And it must be rendered by the disciples with a good will, "for the Lord loveth a cheerful giver (2 Cor 9:7). " For if the disciple obeyeth with an ill will, and murmureth, not only with lips but also in his heart, even though he fulfil the command, yet it will not be acceptable to God, who regardeth the heart of the murmurer. And for such an action he acquireth no reward; rather he incurreth the penalty of murmurers, unless he maketh satisfactory amendment.

On Fashion Again for Catholic Ladies

What we should be wearing to Church on Sunday....with a mantilla or hat!

Well, I do not have money but if I did, I would be tempted to get the entire Christian Dior daywear collection this Autumn and Winter. Not the see-through, swishing evening wear, which is not modest, but most of the skirts, tops and jackets are great.

It has been a long time since common sense and elegance have been combined in fashion for every day wear. Those of us who wear professional or semi-professional dress can now find things which do not look like we are stealing from our brothers' closets. The new fashions are feminine and modest for the most part.

If you enjoy looking at these things, above is a link. One can get ideas, then use the basic trends by buying less expensive but "trendy" things.

But, ladies, remember, YOU set the trend.

The only thing I would not buy are the platform shoes, which some of us suffered for a VERY short time in the seventies and gave up as stupid, uncomfortable and really, not attractive.

Also, intelligent girls and women wear flats--did you know this?

I do not know where I fit in, as I wear Danskos. I am very "medieval".

I have very few winter skirts. It does not matter if people see the same thing if one is smart looking. Quality, not quantity. Even St. Pio, (Padre Pio) would approve of the skirt lengths.

To build a society where God does not exist...musings on politics and reason

After discussing the GOP convention with some Europeans, I realized that many people here have fallen into two errors. The first is a great cynicism towards all forms of governance, which is dangerous. The second error is that Catholicism cannot deal with the complex questions of politics. But, we must and shall. One of our strengths is natural law philosophy.

The lack of natural law philosophy and the relativism of ethics, as well as the emphasis on individualism have created many nations which are now created to exist as if God is not real.

This did not happen overnight. And, as I read Gramsci, who recognized that the only group which realized what was happening were the Popes from 1848 on, I realize that most people in both the East and the West now truly believe that a nation, governments can exist outside of natural law or a recognition of the existence of God.

The Church under Blessed John Paul II moved away from Thomistic Philosophy which emphasized the relationship between God and the State to a philosophy based on relationships. The only problem with this switch is that we must still realize that the power of the people is limited even in relationship. Relationship among people is not infallible.

People, leaders, governments cannot determine law. If law is determined only by people, it remains grounded on relativism and subjectivism.

Tyrannies thrive on relationships of small cabals who decide what law is or is not.

If a small group has power, this power can determine anything. This has been the movement of law in Europe and in America.

That Cardinal Dolan and Congressmen Ryan AND Governor Romney referred to natural law is significant.

The law which is written on the hearts of men and women because we are human is called natural law and this must be recognized not as an old-fashioned concept but a sacred realization of our being.

Relativism and individualism ignore God or any absolutes. Many conversations regarding politics no longer include any idea of absolutes.

I am unabashedly a Thomist. I do believe we can apply the basic ideas of Aquinas and Augustine to modern politics and the relationship to the polis, the city, the State.

If a political party or government denies natural law, we have chaos or totalitarianism.

I am all for States' Rights. I am for small government. I think that the family, the local community, the polis should deal with most of the problems of governance. I am against large government as it takes away from subsidiarity and personal responsibility. To be continued...

Think, pray, act. Read Thomas Aquinas. Read Pope Benedict XVI.

Mini-series on Benedictines-Two: the new biography of Mother Marie Adele Garnier

Mother Adele Garnier, or Mother Mary of St. Peter, is the foundress of the Congregation of Adorers of the Sacred Heart of Jesus of Montmarte. These are called the Tyburn Benedictines.

She wrote hundreds of letters in her lifetime and a biography of her has just been published, literally, hot off the press. She was a mystic, in the unitive way, in the same category at St. Teresa of Avila, or St. John of the Cross. Her time for canonization will come.

Here are two sections from letters of hers

"Do you think a bit too much of your mistakes, my dear little daughter, and under this impression you fall back   on yourself and you concentrate in a vague fear and anxiety. Try not to scrutinise yourself so much, my good daughter; immerse yourself in the merciful love of God...Think of him, love him, strive to do everything for him, and little by little, he will attenuate your failures and put in their place in your soul the virtues that he loves. May you always desire to imitate this Divine Model who has said to us through his word and example: 'always do what pleases my Father'".

She also wrote: "My very dear daughter, may the holy and adorable will of God be our only satisfaction and joy! In this will we are assured of finding the true good, that alone is able to satisfy our love. Everything else merits not even a desire, nor any regret. Never forget this.'"

Here is a review of the book and more information, and there is more on the link above. The Vatican Press published the book. It is available now.

Goodbye to She is Catholic

God bless. Young ones, take up the challenge.

She is Catholic has responded to a call from God to be a nun. Here is a good phrase for you all to consider-

Let God love you in the way He wants to love you. And, love God in the way He wants to be loved.

That is what responding to a vocation is-loving and receiving love in God's Will and Way, not yours...

Here is a photo of her from August 29th, 2012. Praise God.

Bomb Suspect Arrested in Davenport, Iowa Bomb Plan

Northpark Mall is our families' second home. All the up-market dress departments and book shop owners knew us at one point, or least my mom, the intrepid shopper, personally. She can phone up some of the stores where we have shopped for years and ask them to hold things, watch for sales in skirts or dresses in our sizes, or give a heads-up on the sale of certain perfumes. For years, my parents did Mall Walking, with the Mall Walkers, covering several miles in the winter, and having coffee with friends afterwards. As younger persons, we met and ate junk food there (Chick-Fil-A among others), and the kids played in the game areas. Nice, friendly, clean.

My mom and almost got caught  in a tornado in Younkers, which must shut the doors and keep all people inside until the danger passes. We got out just in time before the doors shut automatically, as we wanted to be at home in the basement, rather than at the Mall during a tornado.

Some person decided to bomb the Mall. Thankfully, he was found out and has been arrested in Illinois. Even in Iowa...terrorism can happen.

Obamanation - Jon McNaughton

I have featured this artist on my blog many times. He is a genius is political statement art, a genre that has existed for centuries.

Here are two links and please look at these: the first is this video and the second is below. Let the man and his artwork speak. By moving your mouse over the symbols in the painting, you will get many references to the news and stories behind the artistic representation. This is brilliant.

Nick Clegg pushing the politics of envy

Well, I do not always agree with some political commentators here, but one thing is becoming more clear and that is Nick Clegg must go as Liberal Party Leader. He has veered so far left in his response to taxes, that he sounds like a communist spewing out the "politics of envy". Thankfully, his days seem to be numbered for other reasons, such as his support for civil unions, which most English people do not want.

He is pushing his own or someone else's agenda. He has to go.

Here is a key article. And, as a reminder, just in case you have not been reading this blog regularly, is an excellent site for the Catholic position against socialism. Happy reading.
