The more I speak with young people who were not born until after Vatican II, the more I realize that many people have a romanticized view of the pre-Vatican II Church.
I remember well the old Church and can assure people that many of the things which create unpleasant feelings in liturgies or among Catholics had counterparts in the pre-Vat Church.
Did people complain about priests? Yes!
Did people complain about the music? Yes!
Were people critical of dry sermons, or sermons which were without scholarship? Yes!
Did people complain of sermons on raising money? Yes!
Priests were less engaged in the daily lives of their parishioner on some levels. For example, priests in certain urban or rural communities could visit the parishioners and bless houses, but in some areas, the priest shortage began before Vatican II.
Priests rarely talked about politics. If they did, it was about communism and socialism as evils in general.
Priests did not talk about sexual matters at all. Things like adultery or the growing promiscuity of the larger culture were not mentioned from the pulpit. Nor were books or movies discussed from the pulpit.
At daily Mass, most priests did not have sermons at all.
Where there were large religious orders, people saw nuns and monks more than in rural areas, or highly protestant areas. Some people today say that there daughters have never seen a nun in a habit. That is tragic.
But, there have always been areas where nuns were scarce. To romanticize that America was highly Catholic is not to look at the real history of the Church here in the States.
This country has always been Protestant first.
People also romanticize about how active the priests were in leading groups.
To be fair, there were more lay leaders in activities pre-Vatican II than now.
Men's and women's groups were found in every parish. Now, most parishes do not have Altar and Rosary Societies, or the Sodality of Mary, or the Children of Mary, or the Legion of Mary, or the Holy Name Society.
The laity were not sheep, but active members of groups, including financial groups which aided in fund raising and being accountants in churches.
Some men and women in my diocese when I was a child were Benedictine Oblates. Some were Third Order Carmelites.
It is the liberalization of some of these orders which led to the laity not pursuing membership.
In my own family, over 100 hundred years ago, the laity published and wrote for two Catholic magazines, help found a grade school, help found a large monastery, organized international Catholic charities, wrote Catholic novels, and gave generously to the building of churches.
To think that priests were the only movers and shakers in the "old" church is just not true.
The laity have become less involved in church life, rather than more so.
And to believe the priest had responsibility for every detail of parish life is just a myth.
A priest or two or even three could not do all the things people think priests did pre-Vatican II.
And, there is only one Fulton J. Sheen....
Do not romanticize the past. Do not burden your priests with unrealistic expectations. Do not think that the laity should not be very, very active in the Church.

Are you fighting the wrong battles? Could be a sign of spiritual sloth.
Christ said this of us:

14 You are the light of the world. A city seated on a mountain cannot be hid.

16 So let your light shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.
But, too many Catholics are not being salt or light. The main reason for this is the lack of their own holiness. The mediocre cannot be salt or light.
A second reason has been the clericalization of the laity, a theme on my own blog in 2007 or so. Too many lay people want to be seen being Eucharistic Ministers, or readers.
But, the third reason is more subtle.
The vast majority of the laity are picking up battles which are not theirs to fight. We are not clergy, we do not work in the Vatican or have influence in the chancery offices.
We are not privy to what goes on in the deanery meetings regarding priestly formation.
We are lay.
So what fights are the laity picking up which are not their "business" and what fights should we be fighting?
One, wherever we live or work, our first job is to evangelize or re-evangelize our siblings and co-workers. We should be honest, and defend the Church when we can. We should not be accepting evil. We should be reaching out to the unbelievers.
When I had my own house, no unmarried couples stayed as guests in the same room. That is a decision of a real lay Catholic.
When I had my own house, and it was Friday, only fish or vegetarian dinners were served. That was showing solidarity with the entire Church, and under my watch as the cook.
As a teacher and a tutor, I only spoke the truth. I never inflated grades or compromised the Faith.
That is what we as lay people are called to do. Be salt in the world.
It is not our job to tell bishops or cardinals what to do. Can we pray? Yes.
Example. Too many lay people waste time working on the consecration of Russia. Folks, this is not our business, but the Pope's and the bishops'.
Example. Too many lay people waste time praying for changes in the Church regarding apparitions. Folks, this is not our business, but the bishops' and the Pope's.
They have their area of authority and we have ours.
The fact that the lay men and women in the Church are weak is the fault of the faithful laity.
I see this weekly.
Why are not Catholic men and women talking to others in the congregation about the evils of Common Core and not having kids in the public schools? Why are they not presenting the need for home schooling if there are no independent Catholic schools in the area not using Common Core? Your children's involvement in education is your business, primarily.
Why are Catholic men and women accepting discussions about petitions to Rome on topics the bishops and Pope need to decide, rather than talking about things we can do daily to make the Church strong?
Why are Catholic men and women not supporting pro-life candidates actively? Why are the laity not running for office when some can afford this?
Why are Catholic men and women not steering their peers away from yoga classes, Reiki, chiropractic procedures, certain occult books their children are reading, and so on?
Why are Catholic men and women not telling Catholic home schoolers not to use protestant books, which are slanted against the Church; parents continuing to give money to those publishers which hate the Catholic Church?
Why are men and women not speaking to those in the TLM who are calling Francis a fake Pope, which he is not, but our true Pope?
Why are men and women at the TLM saying that the NO is invalid, when it is not? Why do some not receive Communion at the NO, giving bad example and being holier than Rome?
Why are men and women pretending that members of their own families are not exhibiting evil, those who are living in serious sin, and not just sexual, instead of facing this and dealing with this?
Why are parents not teaching their children the Faith in the home, not disciplining, not forming the children in the virtues?Why are Catholics not boycotting stores like Starbucks or brand names like Pepsi, one of the biggest supporters of PP? Lay people buy things and need to lead in boycotts, not the clergy. One of my TLM priests relied on me to give him boycott details.
Why are so many of the laity not studying the Catechism of the Catholic Church, or not reading such documents as Jesus Christ, Bearer of the Water of Life?
Why are the laity wasting time with old forms of groups which do not speak to the times and not forming new groups?
To be a lay person is hard.
To not follow Rome is to be a protestant, either on the left or on the right.

We are the Church Militant, not the Church Pansy.
It is easier to concentrate on things not under our authority than to deal with things that are. But, this is spiritual sloth.
Think about this. If you are not acting like a lay person, not living up to your baptismal vows, even though you are attending the TLM, your own soul may be in danger for not living out your vocation.
The Church is not a democracy, folks. It is a hierarchy. And the lay life is not that of the clerics.
Period.

I took my son to plays when he was five; to concerts, earlier than that, as he started violin at three.
No one eats at a concert or a play.

Is it laziness on the part of the mums, or is it the belief that a three year old or a six year old cannot go without food for two hours?
I am really shocked that this is happening at the TLM.

Sigh...got one today or rather, yesterday
Recently, I have seen that the seminaries have turned from true spiritual direction to psychology. One sem told me that the discussions in spiritual direction involve to much “understanding” sin but not dealing with repentance.
Are we raising another generation of priests who do not know how to deal with sin because they themselves are not taught the road to holiness in the seminaries? I have seen this here in the Midwest, where some directors do not lead the young men into prayer or fasting, leading to metanoia, but merely to the so-called “pastoral”. This type of direction depends on the seminary.
To find an excellent confessor is rare because of the lack of sensitivity towards sin and repentance not being emphasized in some seminaries. We need to pray for holy priests in training. Without that, more mediocre priests will be leading the laity astray.

Now that both eyes are "done", I am experiencing the time wherein I have no glasses that work for two weeks. Also, some not too serious complications on right eye-so keep me in your prayers.
It snowed here again, and we are all waiting for warmer weather. This winter has been long and difficult for many.

A Saint for Our Times
Did you know a prominent scientist who first identify dinosaur teeth and laid the grounds for natural selection, was beatified in 1988? He also discovered the fact that stuff found in rocks could be dated as existing before human beings.
Interesting.
He converted from Lutheranism to Catholicism. Blessed Nicholas Stenor is a man to be reckoned with both intellectually and spiritually. He was a geologist and discovered attributes of crystals as well.

Known as the father of stratigraphy and geology, Nicholas Steno worked to understand history by what he could find in the ground. Rather than simply write books about his findings, Steno opted to do his own hands-on research. As an innovative thinker, he disagreed with his contemporaries in thinking that shark-tooth-shaped objects found imbedded in rocks "fell from the sky." Instead, Steno argued that these formations were fossils. His dedication to analysis, critical thinking, and creative thinking make him a great subject for a Google doodle!

Pray for the Persecuted Christians
The facts speak for themselves. Reliable estimates indicate that anywhere from 100-200 million Christians are persecuted every year; one Christian is martyred every five minutes. Approximately 85% of this persecution occurs in Muslim majority nations. In 1900, 20% of the Middle East was Christian. Today, less than 2% is.

Perfection Series II: lxiv-The Only Truly Perfect Creature of God
Our Blessed Mother could accept the message of Gabriel for one reason. She was pure of heart, mind, and soul from the moment of her conception. The Immaculate Conception, the most perfect person ever created by God, had been prepared from the moment of her existence for this day.
To be called to be the Theotokos, Mary was set aside among all women. She is "full of grace".
We cannot be like Mary, as she is unique. But, we can be holy as God has called us to be holy.
We can cooperate with grace to the extent that God created us to do so.
All saints are not equal. There are great saints, like SS. Bernard of Clairvaux, Therese of Lisieux, Catherine of Siena, Padre Pio, Augustine.
There are small saints like Blessed Margaret of Castello, Pier Giorgio Frassati, Tarcisius, Dula.
We can be the saints God has called us to be only if we allow Him to take away all sin and tendencies towards sin. Is this impossible? No, but we may fail now and then at first. The call to being in union with God demands work and attention. Those of us who were born in Original Sin, unlike Mary, Our Mother, must be humbled.
She is our model, but as the Queen of Saints, she is far above us, and we can only sit and her feet and learn from her how to please God. She is the greatest woman ever created and the New Eve, set on earth to bear the New Adam, Christ, the God-Man. By one man sin came into the world, and by One Man came salvation. Christ, the Second Person of the Blessed Trinit.y came from a perfect woman and from God the Father, through the Holy Spirit, to be Incarnated on earth. Christ, with the Trinity from all ages, at one time in history, became a tiny embryo in the womb of Mary. We can hardly grasp the meaning, the reality of the Incarnation. But, Mary did. She said "Yes" as she had been prepared from all time for this moment.
I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth,
of all things visible and invisible.
I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God,
born of the Father before all ages.

The Theotokos, the God-Bearer, deserves our honor and praise. She is not merely the best of women, she is The Woman, called from all time, to be the Mother of God.

(I rarely disagree with Voris but) Original Sin is the Sin of Adam
The women's liberation movement is indeed evil. But, the feminization of men happened much earlier than the 1960s. The great storm of forty years ago was a result of the emasculation of men which had happened as early as three generations before 1960.
What weakened men over the centuries was not the uprising of women in the '60s and '70s, but the result of two world wars and the selfishness of the new generations of peter pans.
If one looks at the history of the family, the male leadership of the family became undermined at the latest in World War I. The First World War killed off the old aristocracy. The First World War killed off thousands of good Catholic men..
The best and the brightest men of Europe were killed in that unnecessary war. The cream of the crop of men from all the European nations died going over the trenches.
The Jazz Age revealed a "Lost Generation" of men who acted like peter pans, refusing to get married and playing until they died. Contraception grew up in the 1920s and 1930s. In fact, the Anglican Church approved contraception at the 1930 Lambeth Council. The men who were marrying and not marrying could be Christians and expect women to contracept.
Men took the lead at the Lambeth Council. Men decided on contraception there, and in the other Protestant denominations.
In 1970, the Presbyterian church allowed contraception and abortion.
In 1970, the Lutheran Church of America accepted contraception and abortion.
In 1977, the UCC accepted both.
Except for the Presbyterians, there were no female "clergy" at these times.
All these decisions came from men, who were voting to destroy the family.
One of the missing ingredients in those who blame the feminist movement for such evils is this history and the fact that many men came back from both World War I and World War II not wanting anything to do with discipline or authority. Peter pans existed a plenty in the 1960s.
The generation of peter pans grew up in the 1902s and 1930s first. Many women in that age group failed to find strong men as husbands, as the damage was done earlier. Boys were not trained to be like their fathers, or worse, they rebelled against strong fathers, leaving the women without protectors. This pattern repeated itself in the 1950s aand 1960s. How many dads told their daughters not to wear mini-skirts, or not to be out late; not to go to pubs, or not to date weak men? Few...very few dads really were involved in their daughters' lives in these times. Dads no longer looked out for suitable mates for their girls, letting females fend for themselves in this important decision. Few brothers watched out for the good of their sisters, instead, not growing up themselves, not taking responsibility in being protectors.
Women were rebelling against weak men, as well as those who abused their roles in the families. Did satan jump in and push the feminist agenda? Of course. But, the evil began with the abdication of men as real leaders in the family and in the Church.
To blame women is like Adam blaming Eve. It is not the sin of Eve for which we and Christ Himself suffered, but the sin of Adam, who refused to take responsibility for his own mate.
And, can we not see that the weakness of the clergy before Vatican II LED to Vatican II? The crisis in leadership had hit the Church earlier than the feminist movement. Those who think that the priests who were ordained in the 1950s did not contain in their ranks those who wanted to protestantize and liberalize the Church should look at the members of the committees. I have had priests in their 80s tell me that they became priests in order to make the Church more protestant. They succeeded.
The fact is that there was a leadership crisis in the Church from the 1930s, of those who wanted to have a Pan-Christian church. This ideal of false ecumenism came out of the fear of communism and fascism, but created a modernist mind-set which directly fed into the changes we see among Catholics today.
Men controlled the Church in the 1930s, not women, and these men were modernists and followers of the heresy of Americanism. The rot had set in much earlier than 1960.
Think again. If Adam had not accepted Eve's sin, there would be no Original Sin.
Men, start taking responsibility for your own lack of manhood and stop blaming the Eves of this world.
Adam's cowardice is the cowardice of all men who do not take responsibility for history.

Max The Last Story
Max and Father Simon talked for hours. Father decided to teach Max about the Faith one on one, as the RCIA was in full swing. A grateful Max agreed to meet once a week until Easter for two hours. He walked away with a Bible, the Catechism of the Catholic Church, and A Treatise on Prayer by St. Alphonsus. Maybe Father Simon's lack of aestheticism revealed a sensitive spirit in other areas. Max avoided stumbling over the plants on the stoop.
On the way back to the shelter, Max ran into James coming home from work. James could not help but notice the stack of books in Max's hands. "Hey, those are Catholic books." James really was not surprised.
"James, too bad you are not practicing. You could be my sponsor." James did not answer. Then, he said,
"I found out that Karen is now in RCIA. Must be something in the air." The two walked on to the shelter, but first, they sat on their bench. Max paged through the books. He felt that this journey would prove not only interesting and spiritually beneficial, but fun.
James remained silent. "My one brother died when I was a kid. I got mad at God. He did not have to let him die. And, Mike died. I just do not understand why we are here."
Max waited a moment. "Why do you have to understand everything? God and the spiritual life are mysteries to us. We can only learn so much, but we have to try."
Their ruminations ended when a huge gust of wind brought in a shower of rain. Max put the books under his shirt, and they ran into the shelter.
At this time of year, in the last weeks of March, the number of men in the shelter had dwindled to about ten. Some of the Memphis men left to go back to the city. A few had found jobs. Some just disappeared.
James laid down on his cot. "I just don't feel well, Max." Max looked at James. He looked very ill. "I am going to phone a doctor."
James tried to sit up, but could not. He was too dizzy and he complained of chest pain. Max got the director of the shelter and together they determined that James had to go to the hospital. He had symptoms of a heart attack.
Max said, "An ambulance is coming. Is there anything else you want, James?"
"I told you death comes in threes," he gasped. "Call Father Simon, would you?"
James asked to use the phone, and within a few minutes, Father Simon was kneeling next to James' cot.
Max and the director stood apart. They could hear the words of the priest, absolving James of his sins.
Then, the doors burst open and the paramedics came in with a stretcher. Father Simon stood up and walked over to Max.
"This was a good thing you did, Max. I don't think he will make it." The paramedics began phoning the angioplasty doctor at the hospital. Then, one got out the defibrillator. They gave James two shots as well. But, after fifteen minutes, it was clear James was gone.
"Well," said Father Simon. "He is in a better place."
Max asked, "Do you mean heaven, Father?"
"I don't know for sure, but either there, or purgatory. He made a good confession, and I gave him the last rites. One cannot do much more than that. See you on Thursday."
Father left, but stopped and blessed James' body first. The paramedics covered the body up, and thanked Max and the director for phoning.
"He went so fast, it could have been something hereditary. We just saw this a while ago."
Max nodded. But, unlike Mike, James had opened his heart to God, as it was giving way.
"Thank you, Mary and thank you Jesus", was all Max could say.
