Photo taken in 1931 during the demolition of Christ the Savior Cathedral in Moscow. It had served as the seat of the Patriarch of the Russian Orthodox Church since its completion in 1860 as a monument by Alexander I to commemorate the withdrawal of Napoleon's troops from Russia in 1812.* http://www.collectingsoviethistory.com/2011/04/soviets-and-russian-orthodox-church.html |
